Mandala Drawing Guide

Mandala Drawing Guide

Create a calming moment through colour and pattern. Mandala drawing invites residents to focus on one shape or stroke at a time, offering a gentle way to practise mindfulness. Choosing colours and repeating shapes can encourage concentration, creativity and hand movement, while a shared table gives residents the opportunity to connect through conversation.

The provided Mandala Drawing Guide Templates include a simple and a detailed template. Feel free to allow residents to choose or select the best template for the ability of each participant. Residents can also decide to use as much or as little of the chosen template design as they wish - there is no need to complete every section.

STEP 1

Download and print out the templates provided. We recommend printing onto cover paper as this will provide a sturdier base for decorating. You may wish to enlarge the template if residents would prefer to have more space to draw or colour.

STEP 2

Invite each resident to choose either the simple or more detailed Mandala Drawing Guide template. Offer to draw some simple shapes for anyone who may find that helpful.

STEP 3

Ask the residents to draw shapes or patterns in the sections of the Drawing Guide and encourage residents to notice the movement of the pencil as they create.

Tip: For a simpler activity, use just four sections of the first guide or ignore some of the circles. The aim is to enjoy the creative moment, not to make a perfect pattern.

STEP 4

If desired, residents can trace over any pencil lines with a permanent pen. Residents may also wish to move straight to colouring.

STEP 5

Invite the residents to add colour at a comfortable pace and pause whenever needed; the Mandala does not have to be finished in one sitting.

STEP 6

One the mandala is complete, you can display the whole sheet, cut it out or mount it on contrasting paper. Supervision is recommended when using scissors. Encourage discussion and invite anyone who wishes to share their choice of colours or favourite part of their design.
